🌋 Etna live status — read first

Etna has been in an effusive flank eruption since ~Jan 2026 (yellow alert). The summit above ~2,850 m is closed, groups capped at 10, dusk curfew (no night lava). But the lower mountain runs normally — cable car to 2,500 m and all the walkable craters — and fresh lava makes it more dramatic. Check ct.ingv.it + a webcam the day before; big ashfall day → swap for Alcantara.

from 20:30

★ FINC clowns — “Clownpedia Live” (booked)

Tickets bought — finale at the open-air Teatro della Nike, Parco Archeologico Naxos, Giardini Naxos. Physical clowning, language-independent, kid-perfect. ~30 min from the San Giovanni base; home after.

Etna / Taormina

★ Etna — drive up (two roads)

North · Piano Provenzana (~45 min, lean here): closer + quieter; free Monti Sartorius crater loop (3.25–4 km, 1.5–2 h, signposted, no guide), the 2002-eruption craters & buried ski-station (Trail 702), Ragabo pine forest. Parking €5 (or free roadside at Rifugio Citelli for Sartorius).
South · Rifugio Sapienza (~1h15): free Crateri Silvestri rim loop (45–90 min, ~€5); cable car to 2,500 m €54/€30 child; +4×4+guide to 2,750–2,920 m €78–82/€50. Parking €4.
Kid thrill: a guided lava-tube cave (~€65). Bring warm layers + closed shoes — cold & windy up top.

✓ Open Etna Nord → Cable car →

Free self-guided hikes (Etna Nord) — more detail

Monti Sartorius loop — the one to do: ~3.25–4 km, 1.5–2 h, easy, signposted, no guide. Seven grass-covered 1865 craters you can walk into, black lava fields and endemic Etna birch. Kid-perfect (touch lava, peer into craters, spot lizards). Trailhead is roadside by Rifugio Citelli (~1,670 m), NOT at Piano Provenzana itself — free parking (3–4 cars, arrive early). Closed shoes (sharp gravel) + a fleece even in summer.
Trail 702 → 2002 craters → Monte Nero — starts right at the Piano Provenzana car park: the buried ski-station lava, then the Monte Nero cone (~6.3 km, 2–2.5 h). Freely walkable on the lower section — don’t push past ~2,800 m (guide-mandatory + inside the eruption exclusion zone).
Also free, no transport: Timparossa wood (shady forest), Ragabo pinewood + the flat Pista Altomontana.
